Rumour or Fact?

Fact Or Rumour?

I'm at total loss of idea if the story or...should i call it a rumour is anything to go by............as palpable tension induced by anxiety over the fate of militant leader, Henry Okah, enveloped the Niger Delta and indeed other parts of Nigeria on Tuesday.

Okah was said to have died in Kaduna. The government are denying claims that he died during military interrogation, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), said the man met his death in police custody.

Presidential Spokesman, Segun Adeniyi, was quoted by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) as saying that Okah was “in safe custody.” Public Relations Officer of the One Division of the Nigerian Army, Kaduna, Col. Ganiyu Akinola, denied knowledge of the incident. Akinola, who also doubles as the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, said it was news to him that Okah was extradited from Angola to Kaduna, as there were no such records in the formation of the Army or any other security agency in the state.

But the MEND insisted last night that Okah succumbed to injuries from gun shot wounds about 0400 hours on Tuesday at a military hospital in Kaduna after he was shot in what his interrogators claimed was through an “accidental discharge” from the automatic weapon of one of the guards. Anyho, the MEND has given the FG 24 hours to confirm or deny the rumour. “Failure to do this will bring bloodbath in that region and beyond. We will not take prisoners from the military or oil worker,” said MEND Spokesman, Jomo Gbomo.

Last week, Okah was extradited from Angola, where he was held in September for allegedly trying to buy arms. Adeniyi said Okah is in Abuja, adding: “I know that (he) is alive. He is in safe custody.” Foreign agencies described Nigeria as a country that is full of wild rumours, saying this one could well turn out to be a hoax.“ ( i only hope so coz the consequence will be too grave to be imagined).

Certainly, if Okah has died in custody, it'll definitely spark a fresh round of violence and derail any talk of peace”, said the BBC. This guy is a founding-member of the MEND, which carried out attacks in the Delta two years ago that cut Nigeria’s oil production by a quarter. They are the most organized & dreaded of all the militant groups in the Niger-Delta. These guys are fighting for a known cause.
